The kind of vinegar you should use if a recipe requires it will depend upon the type of dish you are trying to make. Normally, you should white vinegar in recipes which asks for “vinegar” without specifying the type of vinegar needed. However, please note that this is not always the case because each type of vinegar has its own distinct flavor and it may either make your dish more sour or sweeter.

Some people claim that if you are trying to make an American dish, you need to use white vinegar. For French dishes, you would need white wine vinegar, for Greek dishes you would need red wine vinegar, and for British dishes you would need to use malt vinegar.
