Alcohol is processed into harmless gas and water via the liver. The liver houses important enzymes that can break down the chemicals in alcohol so that it does not damage the body. However, the liver’s ability to break down alcohol is limited. There is only so much alcohol that a person’s liver can break down in a single day, and drinking more than this amount leads to intoxication.

Additionally, prolonged periods of heavy drinking will lead to serious liver damage and even liver failure. While moderate amounts of alcohol are typically not a concern, each glass will do some damage to your liver. It is important to regulate the amount you drink so that you can avoid serious problems in the future.
