Steam engine.

August comte, Charles Fourier- said we were at the end of history in 1800s because james watt perfected the steam engine so as to create energy so as to create mass production of textiles and mining. They believed the age of scarcity was coming to an end because of the factories and mass production and are producing in huge quantities and providing it at a low cost. They believed steam put an end to scarcity, but we still had the argument of how to make money, whether the individual should have the right to make infinite profit, infinite growth, or should the state own all of these. They believed technology brought the end of history.
