A computer program that can copy itself without taking any input, is a quine. Unfortunately, those programmers who wish to cause havoc have used these as malware, inserting a copy of itself into another program whereby it becomes part of that program and propagates.
It spreads from one computer to another and has therefore been termed a 'virus' . The 'infection' is caused by any interaction between one program and another, one computer and another. The spread is rapid and deadly.
