Saying hello to people is a very good thing in Arabic; it signifies respect and greetings. There are multiple ways of saying hello in Arabic. The standard way of saying hello in Arabic is by saying, “As-Salam Alaykum,” it is translated literally to a blessing that means “peace be upon you.”

It is what most Muslims use to greet one another; the other Muslims respond to the As-Salam Alaykum by saying, “WA Alykom As-slam,” which means peace to be upon you. Here are other ways of greeting in Arabic

1. In the morning, you can say Sabaḥu Al-Khair
2. In the afternoon or evening, you can say Masa’u Al-Khair.
3. You can say, Salam, Marḥaban, Ahlan, Ahlan sadiqi or Ahlan sadiqati they are all forms of greeting.

People who do not know how to write in Arabic may not know how the word “hello” can be written, but just for reference, it would be written as مرحبا.

• Hello, in Arabic will be pronounced as “marhabaan.”

• Some people would also use “Ahlan.”

• Take note that “Ahlan” can be used for anyone that you see any time of the day.

• Most people would approach people, put their hands together, and kiss the person that they are going to greet on the cheek.

• Of course, while kissing on the cheek, the words “Ahlan” or “Marhabaan” will be used.
There are also other greetings that they may use, such as “Salam Alaikum” which is considered to be more formal.

Just as there are so many words, expressions, you can use to convey the same meaning as "Hello" in English, there are also so many words you can use without using the direct translation of hello in Arabic.

- Marhaba. This is the direct Arabic word that has the appropriate meaning as hello. The pronunciation of this word should not be a problem as you can easily pronounce it exactly the way you see it. Marhaba means hello or hi. There are also some occasions you might choose to use the plural form of Marhaba which is Marahib (hellos) to greet people.

- Salamo Alaykom: since "hello" is used mostly to greet people we meet or to acknowledge their presence, Salamo Alaykom is also another expression that can be used in place of "Marhaba" to say helo to people, though it does not have the same meaning as hello. Salamo Alaykom means “Peace be Upon You”.
