Gout is an extremely painful inflammation of joints that is caused by a metabolic defect, which also causes the accumulation and deposition of uric acid and urates around the joints. Turf Toe, on the other hand, occurs when there is an injury to the connective tissues of the big toe, especially at the metatarsophalangeal joint, causing a very painful sensation.

Unlike turf toe that is caused by joint instability, inappropriate sports shoes, bad terrain surfaces, sprains, gout is primarily caused by a defect in some metabolic processes, usually due to a decrease in the excretion of the uric acid. While gout is a condition common to men, turf toe is general to everybody, most especially in sports such as rugby, athletics, football, etc.

Symptoms of gout are severe pain in the big toe, high protein levels in the blood, high concentration of uric acid in the blood. Symptoms of turf toe are the inability to bend one's toe down, severe pain around the big toe, limp, etc.

Starting with their definitions; gout is considered a metabolic disease that is caused when uric acid crystals accumulate in the joint. In contrast, turf toe is an injury that can really be painful, a rupture of the connective tissue in the very part of the metatarsophalangeal joint in the big toe. Mostly, gout occurs in men.

Meanwhile, most athletes that perform on artificial terrain such as in football, gymnastics, martial arts, rugby and athletics are more prone to turf toe. Gout symptoms include sudden, long lasting, and severe pain in your big toe, blood increases in uric acid levels and blood levels, difficulty in joint movement, kidney inflammation, kidney stones, high blood pressure, swelling and redness.

Conversely, the turf toe symptoms include acute and sudden pain of trauma, limp, and local swelling. The cause of Gout can be a purine metabolism congenital defect; while joint instability, unsuitable terrain surface, inappropriate sport boot, unsuitable warm up, and more can be the causes of turf toe.
