Although ZIP and GZIP are two common file formats for data compression, there are still some differences between the two. While ZIP is a better tool if you want to archive or compress files, GZIP can only be used for file compression. However, with the use of another tool like TAR, GZIP can also be to archive files.

Files compression means you are reducing the size of the file so as to save more space and so that files can be easily transmitted across the internet. Archiving means you want to combine multiple files so that the result can be a single file.

However, since GZIP can also be used to archive files, users prefer it to ZIP since it can be used to archive all files before they are compressed. In contrast, ZIP files are compressed individually before they are added to the archive. Another difference is that ZIP is used mostly on Windows operating system, while GZIP is used mostly on UNIX or Unix-like operating system.
