Xanax and Zoloft are two medications, usually prescribed to patients suffering from depression. Although both work perfectly, however, there are some differences between the two. Xanax is a brand name for an antidepressant drug known as alprazolam, while Zoloft is a brand name for an antidepressant drug known as Sertraline.

Xanax is an example of drugs that are classified under benzodiazepines, whereas Zoloft is an example of drugs that are classified under selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Both drugs work by inducing the secretion of the happy hormone in the body. While Xanax is used mostly in the treatment of anxiety disorders such as depression and panic attacks, Zoloft is used not only for anxiety disorders but also for post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder.

People are usually advised to consult their doctor before taking any of these two drugs in order to avoid cases of severe side effects. For instance, Xanax is not meant to be taken by pregnant women. Also, Zoloft should not be taken with MAOI drugs.
