Abrasion is limited to superficial destruction, while attrition is not restricted to that kind of destruction. Abrasion is explained as the destruction or wearing of the surface of particulates, while attrition refers to an extensive reduction of the entire particulates. Abrasion wounds usually occur when the skin comes in contact with a rough surface, which results in rubbing away of the upper or top layer of the epidermis.

While on the other hand, Attrition wounds are basically caused by friction or rubbing, such as grinding of teeth. Abrasion usually occurs when a rock hits another surface. Attrition can actually be termed as a form of coastal erosion whereby the surface is basically washed away.

Attrition usually occurs too when a large stone or rock breaks into fragments, which are smaller when they are washed downstream. Attrition is also used to refer to staff reduction in companies through usual processes like resignation or retirement.
