When the rain comes down, it pours onto the land. The water must go somewhere. However, it may fall into a river basin. Then the water moves to the river. The basin is a holding place to allow the river water to flow to a river. It catches the water. Then eventually the water moves from the river into the ocean.

Watersheds also contain the water, but they can be considered rivers because rivers not only hold the water but they even move the water. Therefore, the watershed can also be a river basin. However, some river basins could not be watersheds. They do have some similarities because they both hold water like a bowl before releasing the water to something else.
