Alcoholic and workaholic are not the same. They are far from being the same. The only similarity is that these terms are used to refer to addiction to something. An alcoholic is an individual that is addicted to the use of alcohol. Such a person abuses the use of alcohol.
The term can also refer to the trace amount of alcohol in content. On the other hand, a workaholic is an individual who feels compelled to work excessively. A workaholic puts his or her work above every other thing. Their family, friendships, relationships, and other parts of their life suffer at the expense of their work.
The main difference between the two is what they are addicted to. It is obvious that an alcoholic is someone who is addicted to alcohol while a workaholic is someone who is addicted to working. It seems that there are people who have become addicted to alcohol because they relied on alcohol whenever they have to encounter some tough issues and problems.
There are also some who use it to unwind and those who do this so often become dependent on alcohol. They feel that they cannot function with it anymore. Those who are workaholic will put their work first over everything else that they have in their lives. They would put it over their family and so much more.
