The Senate usually spends 6 years as a single term before going for another election. A person seeking to be elected as a senator must meet some requirements or criteria before he can contest in the election. The criteria for senate is a little bit higher than the ones for house of representatives. A person contesting as a senator must be a citizen of the United States for at least the past 9 years.

The second criterion is that; the person must be at least 30 years of old. Finally, the person must be inhabitants of the states they seek to represent at the time of their election.
