Embolisms can be life threatening and therefored must be removed or dissolved and reduced in a number of ways. One method to reduce them is by the use of an anti-coagulants but there are other treatment options as well. Surgery can be performed to take the clot out and sometimes this is the best options for those whose bodies could not handle an anti-coagulate or for those who did not respond to one,

In mild cases, sometimes an embolism resolves itself. There are also alternative treatments some elect to try. Those are not proven so the tradtional medical field doesn't recommend them. Anti-coagulates are certainly not the only remedy for embolisms but they are perhaps the most popular route doctors go with because they are usually very effective.
