Embolisms can be fatal. There are certain medical conditions that can be underlying in their cause. There are also certain other things that can put an individual at risk for getting one. Those who have thick blook may need to take a blood thinner to help prevent clotting of their blood. Those with thick blood or the risk of clots should not cross their legs and should be sure to maintain a healthy weight as obese individuals are at a higher risk for getting them.

People who don't exercise much are also more likely to suffer from a blood clot. If you have been injured or had surgery. it is usually advised to elevate your legs to prevent an embolism. The measures to take to prevent a clot greatly depend upon what is putting you at risk. If it's inactivity, try being more active if you are physically able to. Those who need to shed some pounds should do so as well. Whatever the underlying reason is can usually be tended to in order tower the risk of a blod clot.
