Insomnia is not often isolated as medical or mental illness, it is mostly seen as a symptom of another illness either a medical or mental illness (like anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Insomnia is a sleep disorder where by people have trouble sleeping.

They may have difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep as long as desired or waking up too early in the morning.

Insomnia is not simply the experience of having difficulty in falling asleep at night, for this can occur after a mentally stimulating evening, too much alcohol or a distressing event. Insomnia is diagnosed when the patient fails to fall asleep when given the opportunity, has difficulty remaining asleep when sleep has finally come.

The quality of sleep has not satisfied the patient's desire (need) for sleep and there are persistent symptoms: poor concentration, fatigue, reduced energy level, mood disturbances and impaired performance on tasks, while depression may follow
