For an average English speaker, the most difficult languages are Arabic, Chinese, Korean and Japanese. It takes a very long time for an average English speaker to learn any of these languages.

Arabic has very few words, written Arabic has very few vowels which makes difficult for people trying to read the language.

To learn Japanese one has to memorize thousands of characters, different writing systems and different syllabary systems. All of these add up to why the Japanese is hard.

Chinese has so many tones and thousands of characters, these make learning the language difficult for English speakers.

Korean has different sentence structure, syntax and verb conjugations this make it hard for average English speaker to learn the language.

There are several noted languages that have been deem hard for the modern English language speaker to learn. Arabic is certainly one of the languages that are hard for the modern English speaker to be able to learn and master. The Chinese originated language of Mandarin is another language that has been determined to be able to learn. It has always been said that the Oriental languages of Japanese and Korean are harder for the modern English speaker to be able to master.

The reason that these languages are so hard to read and write is that the charachters that are used are very much different than what is used in Modern English. Slavic languages are also harder for modern English speakers and that is usually because of the odd conjugation of words and how they are pronounced and elocuted. The way that words are presented are different in a lot of foreign languages as opposed to English.
