Some people may assume that Portuguese and Spanish are the same, probably because of their similarities. It should be remembered that these two have differences that should be noted. There are some words that are used in both Portuguese and Spanish that have different meanings.
For example, in Portuguese, abono means to deposit or to give compensation, but if you would use the same word in Spanish, this may refer to some sort of subscription or to fertilizer. Another similar word is Acreditar. In Portuguese, you use this to say that you believe. In Spanish, this means to show. Barata is another word that is being used differently. Barata in Portuguese means cockroach, while Barata in Spanish means cheap.
