The basic difference between CPT codes and HCPC codes is that HCPC is a different version of CPT. HCPC codes mainly deal with things like ambulances, drug administration, and surgery supplies. In addition, HCPC codes are typically numerical at the bottom level and have letters mixed in at higher levels.
CPT codes can be almost identical to their HCPC counterparts. This creates a dilemma for hospital administrators when it comes to choosing what to use. The general rule of thumb is to compare the uses and codes, and if they’re the same, go with the CPT. If not, use the HCPC. However, more research should be done if you are expected to use these two kinds of codes and don’t know what to use or when to use what.
