Britain's strategy to stop the rebillion after they retreated from boston was to isolate the new england states and to seize ny city. General william howe and admiral richard howe sailed into ny hardor summer 1776 with 32k soldiers including german mercenaries called hessians from the german region of hesse. General howe wanted washington to surrender and they carried instructions to discuss peace terms and offer amnesty to any who pledged allegiance to king george. Washington's had 23k troups which were untrained and had poor equipment. By late fall washington was pushed across the delaware river into pennsylvania with less than 8k troops. The rest had deserted, been captured, or killed.
