In the south of Japan lies the Ryukyu Islands. These islands have a humid subtropical climate and a tropical rainforest climate depending on the location. Rainfall occurs frequently and can include typhoons. This group of islands are grouped into three main areas. Most of the people who reside on the Ryukyu islands are of Japanese descent. Many people who have resided on the islands for many years worship their ancestors.

However, some of the other residents may practice Taoism, Shinto and Buddhism, to name a few. Certain animals can be found here like a giant rat, a flying fox and a paradise flycatcher. The Okinawa Islands, Aguni Islands, Kerma Islands are located among the Ryukyu Islands. The Sakishima Islands and the Daito Islands are also located here.
