When the battery in your car fails, it is not as stressful if you know what to do to fix it. You will conserve a lot of time, money, and energy just by knowing what to do. These simple steps can help. Raise the hood of your car and assess the condition of the battery.

You do not need to remove the battery from the car to clean it.

• Pop open the lid and find the battery.

• Lift the sides that the plastic is covering up on top of the battery.

• Look at the battery cables to determine which are positive and negative clamps on the battery.

• Remove both clamps, and make sure you remove the negative one first.

• Create a cleaning agent out of baking soda and water.

• Combine 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda with one tablespoon of distilled water in a small bowl.

• Stir it up until all of the baking soda has dissolved in the water.

• Apply the agent to the battery connection.

• Dip an old toothbrush or slightly damp rag into the concoction.

• Once it has been applied, you will witness it bubble and foam, as it reacts with the corrosion.

• Rinse the battery once it is clean.

• Smear petroleum jelly onto the clean terminals, which serves to protect the battery from any future corrosion.

• Reattach the positive and negative clamps back to the battery.
