Batteries, which were referred to as Voltaic cell or Voltaic pile, were invented in the 1800 s by Alessandro Volta. Today, chemicals like Li-ion batteries and NiMH are the components used in the dry cell which evolve from the chemicals used in the wet cell before. So, the cell later got to be called battery as influenced by a man named Benjamin Franklin. The old Leyden jars were being used as a kind of capacitor for holding some particular amount of charge.
