The reason that the Lulu and Nana controversy is considered such a big deal by scientists is because the scientist behind it all, Jiankui, is considered to be a bad actor. No one trusts what he is up to. The reaction is strong, condemning him and is understandable as well. There are too many negative possibilites and unanswered questions. Besides, gene editing is probibited and is ethically controversial.

He is now locked in an apartment, reportedly, in hiding. The science community has become painfully aware of what could happen if cloning could be carried out by the wrong person and there definitely is cause for concern after this incident took place, whether it really is the work of cloning or not. It has certainly raised the eyebrows of those in the sceintific community.
