About 70 percent of total freshwater on earth is held in icecaps and glaciers. However only about 1.7 percent of all water on earth is held in icecaps and glaciers. Even though the amount of water locked up is small, it represents a large percentage of the world's total fresh water.

The vast majority, almost 90 percent of earth's ice mass is in Antarctica. It will interest you to know that glacial ice cover about 10 to 11 percent of the totals landscape of the earth covering about 726,000km2.
