Glaciers are usually classified by their morphology, behaviour and thermal characteristics.
Valley glacier is a stream of ice flowing along a valley. The glacier is held together by sides of the surrounding mountains.

Ice caps is seen mostly in North and South of the poles. They are large expanses of glacier ice and have a slightly domed shape.

Ice sheets are massive thick glaciers that cover the planet during the ice age. Ice shelves are floating sections of the ice sheets.

Ice streams also known as outlet glaciers, flow down the valleys between rocky peaks.

Piedmont glacier is formed when a valley glacier spread out into a low flat area.

Tidewater, continental ice sheet, iceberg, hanging glacier are other classifications of glacier.
