Ensuring the patient is in functional body alignment

(a) Vest restraints are needed only when a patients safety is at risk and if there is a physicians order. (b) The knees do not have to be at 90 degrees. Depending on the needs of the patient, the knees may be supported in the extended position on the wheelchair leg rests, (c) After transfer, it is most important that the patient be supported in functional alignment to avoid any strain on neuromusculoskeletal structures of the body. (d) This may be necessary only if the patient is confused and needs to be monitored for safety
