Stalingrad is a place in Russia. However, it is mostly known for being a major battle site during World War II. This battle took place for a little less than half a year. Obviously, the Soviet Union which later became Russia, fought against Germany. Both sides wanted control of the city. The battle ended in 1943 which is in the middle of the war. Both sides fought each other directly by firing their weapons.
After the six months was over, the Soviet Union kept he city and won the battle. Millions of soldiers were killed. It was the worst battle in the Second World War. This seemed like a turning point in the war. At this point, Germany had been gaining ground in Europe and Asia, but after this battle Germany had to remove its troops.
The Battle of Stalingrad during World War II was a turning point of the war because it was the first time the German’s had been defeated. The victory by the Russians prevented the Germans from moving any further into Russia.
Many historians believe this battle was “one of the bloodiest battles in history, with combined military and civilian casualties of nearly two million”. The battle was also a great humiliation for Hitler and a huge confidence builder for Stalin. Following the victory, the Soviet army pushed westward and remained mostly on the offensive for the rest of the war.
