The proper Binomial Nomenclature for the African Butterflyfish is letter B or Pantodon buchholzi. The binomial nomenclature of the African Butterflyfish is derived from the type of family of fish which are located in West Africa. The Freshwater butterflyfish are small types of fish that can grow no more than 5.1 inches in length. They have a large and a vascularized swim bladder which enable them to breathe air even though they are on the surface of the water.

They are carnivorous fish and are known as surface hunters which feed on smaller fish and aquatic insects. Being surface hunters, they primarily capture preys along the surface of the water such as the following: Brine shrimp, bloodworm, prawn and small mealworms.
