Maps actually contain many different parts. However, cartographers claim that there are four main parts of a map that all maps would have these elements. They may have other features, but they definitely would have these four things. Maps would include a title. Each map’s title details what is included in this map. Sometimes, it is not obvious what the map shows.

A key is also always included on a map. The key shows what each symbol on the map means. Sometimes, a squiggly line may represent a river, a small dot main represent a city and a star may represent the capital city. A scale is also found on maps. The scale shows that one inch represents the number of miles or kilometers on this map. Maps do not have to have color on them.
