The overhang in terms of geography on river is a rock formation with a slope of more than 90 degrees and slopes beyond the vertical line. We normally see overhangs on rivers wherein the soft rock is eroded by water which makes the hard rock collapse because it is not supported by anything. There are many things which cause an overhang, one of which is the term called hydraulically induced failure wherein the shear exceeds at the toe of the bank of a river and particles are eroded.

People who are fond of mountain climbing also see overhangs such as the Western Zinne found in the great north faces of the Alps with an upper end reaching about 40 meters horizontally from the foot of the rock’s face.

It is hard rock as the soft rock has been corroded by the water.
