Those muscles are very fragile, and they can experience trauma from small events like starting a new exercise or stepping on an object that makes you turn your feet wrong. Trauma to a muscle can lead to various types of injuries. One example is a sprain, which is damage to a ligament from overstretching. Another is a strain, which is when the muscle tears.
