Disk cleanup helps users remove superfluous or excessive files on the computer that may be taking up space on the hard drive. Disk defragmentation is a function offered in Microsoft that relocates files on a disk to occupy contiguous storage space. The longer a computer is in use, the slower it becomes. This slowdown is because the computer saves files in a way that is independent of the typical saving of a document.

Files are kept in a fragmented form over a number of places, so when a person opens the files, the hard drive must search from a myriad of places to find the actual file. Even if programs are removed to make room for other applications, they do not clean up very well after themselves. Disks clean up helps users eradicate unnecessary files that are no longer being used, then removes those files.

Disk Clean up, and Disk Defragmenter are two major tools that you can use to free up more disk space on your computer so you can have enough space to save other files. Disk clean up operates by tracking files that are not useful and delete them. When you check your computer, chances are you would see some files that you can't just explain how they were formed, and some you are no longer using. This tool will help to track these files so that more space will be available on your system.

On the other hand, Disk Defragmenter works differently. It operates by tracking the location of all the fragmented files. It will also locate those ones that can be modified and relocate them to occupy a single space. However, any file that is in use at the moment cannot be moved by this tool. Invariably, the good thing about these tools is that they help improve the performance of the computer system.
