Blues has been said to have started with Afro American folk music, as well as work and spiritual songs. Rock ‘n roll, which has evolved from many different types of music, is mostly influenced by pop music today. However, its roots are also said to have begun from folk music. Rock also has a signature sound and is easily identifiable to its listeners. It uses the electric bass guitar, drums, organ, and piano. Blues has cultivated its unique sound, which encompasses the use of the harmonica, saxophone, trumpet, and trombone.

Pure rock is said to encompass three chords only. Most rock now typically uses four chords and half chord repetitions. The use of twelve-bar blues progressions in chords is one of the most common characteristics of blues music. A rock group band is commonly made up of four members, while blues music employs more instruments than rock.

Rock and blues are two types of musical styles. These two genres have similar sounds, but there are differences between them. One of those differences is the origin of the music. Blues come from the heart of Afro-Americans.

The genre of rock also has a lot of things similar to Afro-American music, but rock and roll predominantly came from the UK, while Blues is from the US. Both genres use a number of live instruments, but blues will use more instruments than rock will. Another difference between them is in regards to chords. Rock has 3 chords, while Blues have 2 chords.

Rock and blues are two styles of music that can be easily confused to be the same, simply because both share certain similarities. Although the two styles of music were developed with the same instruments, such as drums, piano, electric bass guitar, organ, other instruments like trumpet, trombone, and saxophone are now being used when playing blues music. According to history, blues music was developed in the late 19th century and started from the southern part of the United States.

On the other hand, rock music started in the United States as well as in the United Kingdom in the 1950s. When you listen to blues, there are traces of Afro-American folk music, whereas rock shares more attributes with other genres of music such as electric blues, rock, and roll, etc. The simple twelve-bar blues is one of the common chords in blues, but pure rock uses 3 chords.
