GSM or Global System for Mobile Communication and UMTS are two types of telecommunication technologies that offer mobile services for mobile phones, smartphones, etc. There are some differences between the two. GSM is the older of the two, and it is usually referred to as a second-generation telecommunication technology. GSM was introduced in the 90s.

However, its system has been upgraded in order to give a faster speed, which is usually about 144kb/s. On the other hand, UMTS belongs to the list of the third generation mobile telecommunication technologies. The fact that the 3G mobile network offers more speed than 2G shows that UMTS allows data transfer at a faster rate than GSM. And the implication is that you get to enjoy faster internet connection when you use UMTS than when you use GSM. UMTS makes use of Code Division Multiple Access, whereas GMS uses Time Division Multiple Access schemes.
