The embryo refers to stage one of pregnancy when a baby begins to develop. The embryo is a small seed at the time you go for your first ultrasound. By the fifth week of development, the embryo will exhibit a heartbeat in the early ultrasounds. Over time, the baby develops buds form into hands and legs, and most of the systems develop.

The baby obtains nourishment and oxygen through the placenta. If all goes well with mommy and baby, the embryo begins to transform into a fetus nine weeks after the time of conception. By week 11, the embryo "graduates" to a fetus, and from that point, the process is mostly developmental where the baby looks like a baby, and they grow and continue to develop until they are born.
