Kwanzaa is an African American holiday, which is commemorated chiefly in the United States for the week between December 26th and January 1st every year. The holiday originated in 1966 to encourage African Americans to acknowledge and celebrate their culture. "The Seven Principles of Kwanza" represent each of the seven days that Kwanza is celebrated.
These principles include a responsibility to the community, economic co-operation, helping people within the culture, and listening to your teachers and authority figures. A candle is ignited each day on the distinctive candlestick, the "Kinara," to embody these principles.
Kwanzaa is not as popular as Christmas in the United States, and that's why most Americans don't participate in the celebration, although the former is a secular holiday while the latter is a religious holiday. Kwanzaa is celebrated mostly by Africans, but it is celebrated by few Americans. According to different polls conducted to ascertain the level of participation of Americans during Kwanzaa, a population of Americans between five hundred thousand to two million was given.
Kwanzaa is a seven-day event created by a professor of Black Friday, Dr. Maulana Ron Karenga, at California State University. Kwanzaa celebration is meant to honor and African-American culture, and to strengthen the existing relationship between Africans and Americans. Seven principles were formed from African culture, and they are to be discussed for a period of seven days. Seven candles will be put inside a candle holder, and a candle will be lit every night.
