The cells of phagocytosis are the type of cell that has the ability to ingest foreign particles. It engulfs foreign bodies by extending its cytoplasm. Most phagocytes involved in acute inflammation are the neutrophils, a type of white blood cell that contains granules of cell-destroying enzymes and proteins.

Elie Metchnikoff called the cells phagocytosis. Phagocyte enzymes are released into the vacuole where digestion takes place. Inside the phagocytic vacuole, the bacterium is killed by bactericidal substances released from the cytoplasm of the PMN.
