Rocks are unalike from minerals in that minerals are single crystalline accumulated of one or more elements, while rocks are solid. Rock can either refer to an individual detached sense, as a synonym for stone, generally referring to a portion of the substance.

A mineral is a naturally occurring material that is formed through geological processes and that have a unique chemical composition, which is a highly ordered atomic edifice and specific physical properties. A rock is a naturally happening aggregate of minerals. Rocks do not have a determinate chemical composition. Also, minerals maintain their shape and color, and rocks do not.
