When you see the marine debris particles, you have entered the Pacific Garbage Patch. This area is also known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch or the Pacific Trash Vortex. Unfortunately, there are areas where the litter that has accumulated is called the garbage patch. In these areas, there is trash including plastic, chemical sludge and other trash. There have times when cleanups have taken place.

It has been called the North Atlantic garbage patch. It was first found to be accumulating in 1988 when it was first published in National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
