It took almost 60 years for the Spanish to subdue Native Americans and about 170 years to completely subdue the Yucatan. The Indians were not only forbidden to learn their cultures, there were forbidden to learn, read or write Spanish. In some areas, the natives were declared minors and forbidden to read or write Spanish so they will always need a Spanish man in charge of them to be responsible of their indoctrination.
