There are many reasons that the March on Washington in 1963 was so significant. First, this march seemed to be the turning point in the Civil Rights Movement. During this march or shortly after, Martin Luther King Jr. and some of his key supporters were allowed to meet with the president at the time, John F. Kennedy.

Also, this meeting and march led to the signing of the Civil Rights Act a little while later. The other significance of the March is that King’s most famous speech was given then. It was his “I Have a Dream” speech. Finally, many photos were taken of this March and many people can recognize both the speech’s words and the photos from the scene.
