I'm not sure whether the mining industry has the worst employee record. The catering industry is pretty dire. Medline Industries are reported as lacking training as well as respect and support for their employees. If, however, you are referring to the worst safety record you have to take into account that when someone takes work in a dangerous occupation they are accepting the risk. for instance, banana pickers in Costa Rica run the risk of being sprayed with dangerous chemicals by helicopters as well as seriously damaging their internal organs with the tight straps needed for them to haul the engines carrying huge banana loads.

They sign a document absolving the company of responsibility, and they do this willlingly so that they can earn the higher wages that the work brings. The same situation holds for miners, really, except that the mining company does accept some responsibility for their safety and well-being...such as it is.
