The correct answers to this question are Abraham Lincoln and Republican. The big issue during this election was slavery. As a nominee, Lincoln and his party made the promise to not interfere in the practice of slavery, but they did disagree with expanding the practice into new territories. Lincoln ran against Southern Democratic John C. Breckinridge, Constitutional Union candidate John Bell and Stephen A.

Douglas of the Northern Democratic party. Although he didn't have much support in the slave-owning states in the South, Lincoln won by carrying 18 states and had 180 electoral votes. He won the popular election with 1,865,908 votes and won with 39.8 percent.
