War and Peace is considered a central work of world literature and one of Tolstoy's superior literary achievements. The novel chronicles the antiquity of the French occupation of Russia and the influence of the Napoleonic era on Tsarist society by telling the stories of five Russian aristocratic families. It can be contended that no single English novel reaches the universality of “War and Peace.”

Tolstoy’s narrative structure of the novel is praised for its god-like ability to hover over within events, and also in the way it swiftly and seamlessly portrayed a particular character's point of view. His use of visual detail is often cinematic in scope.
