According to Wikipedia, Leo Tolstoy did not consider "war and peace" a novel. Leo Tolstoy said "war and peace is not a novel, even less is it a poem an still less of a historical chronicle".

He believed war and peace did not conform to standards. The last chapters of war and peace are more of philosophical discussions than narrative discussions. He regarded " Anna Karenina " as his first novel.
