Tennis was invented by Major Walter Wingfield in 1873. The game he invented is known as "Sphairistike" a Greek word which means "playing ball". Major Walter's invention is the real tennis that is played outdoor on a lawn. It was first introduced in Wales, United Kingdom. Many believe that tennis originated way before Major Walter's invention.

A game called " Jeu de paume" in French, it means "game of the palm". The ball was struck with the palm. It was played mostly in northern France in the 12th century but this game has been discredited as the origin of tennis.
