Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony were some early famous feminists. They were both champions for a woman’s right to vote. Some historians call this period in American history the first wave of the feminist movement.
During the second wave, which covered the early 1960s through the late 1980s, famous feminists included Gloria Steinem and Susan Brownmiller. Steinem was famous for testifying before Congress in 1970 for the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment and she co-founded Ms. Magazine, the first feminist magazine, in 1971. Brownmiller is “most recognized for raising public awareness of violent crimes against women and children”.
