There are quite a lot of different type drums as well as different ways to categorize drums. They are primarily differentiated by “the sound they make, the way they are played, the material used in making them, and their significance.” Melodyful.com lists the following basic types of drums: frame drum, kettle drum, hand drum, goblet drum, talking drum, and box drum. Within each of these basic types there are further types.

For example, bongos, congas, and naals are all played with the hands. Drums can also be differentiated by the area of the world where they originated. Most drums come from Africa, Latin America or the Middle East. However, some also come from Europe and some from island nations and from Native American culture.
