The term one-hit wonder refers to the one song that made the singer or band popular because it was such a popular song, but the band or singer didn’t have any other popular song after that. Either the band or singer tried to but couldn’t get a song to be as popular or they stopped making music. I believe the best one-hit wonder of all time is Marcarena by Los del Rio. Not only was this song popular but a dance came with it.
Many people know how to do the dance and sing the song at least twenty years later because it was so popular. Even kids who were born after this song even know it. It probably made enough money that the band members could live off of that money.
The term one-hit wonder is most often used to describe music performers who have only one hit single, or one signature song. Some examples of great one-hit wonders are: "In a big country," by Big Country. The band was a poor man's U2 and in the song, they band made their guitars sound like bagpipes.
"Take on me," by "Ah-ha was a fun 80's song. The video was massively popular with it's black and white comic book story. The 90's remake of "Smooth Criminal" was inspired by Michael Jackson, and performed by the band, Alien Ant Farm.
"O-o-h Child," by Five Stairsteps is highly regarded as being one of the greatest songs of all time, but the group never had another mainstream hit. The song was featured on the hit tv show, "Scandal."
