Many people think that pizza came from Italy. However, the Greeks get the credit for pizza and it goes as far back as the ancient history times. In ancient Greece, made a similar meal like a pizza that included bread. Instead of using pizza sauce, the Greeks used oil and herbs since that is what they had to use.
They also used cheese just like the pizzas that are made today. Today, the modern pizza came from Naples, Italy. It is believed to have happened during the 18th century in Italy when a dish similar to a pizza was made. It appeared to look like a flatbread that we see today. In the early 1800s, people bought pizza at stands outside instead of in restaurants.
The enjoyment of Pizza was first documented in AD 997 in Gaeta and various parts of Central and Southern Italy. The pizza was mainly eaten in the country of Italy until World War II when allied troops stationed in Italy came to enjoy pizza along with other Italian foods.
Until about 1830, the pizza was sold from open-air stands and out of pizza bakeries, and pizzerias keep this tradition today. Antica Pizzeria Port ’Alba in Naples is mostly known as the city's first pizzeria. Pizza first made its first big debut in the United States with the arrival of Italian immigrants in the late 19th century.
